The day the search box stopped existing

What Google I/O 2026 changed, and why organic visibility work in Portugal will have to be rethought.

On 19 May 2026, Google made the most consequential announcement it has made about Search since the product existed. It was not a redesign. It was not an incremental improvement. It replaced the search box.

For 25 years, the interaction with Google began the same way: a white rectangle, a blinking cursor, and the implicit instruction to reduce the question to three or four keywords. That contract has ended.

What is in its place is different in almost every dimension.

What changed, concretely

Five things, announced in the same keynote:

1. A new default model. Gemini 3.5 Flash became the engine of AI Mode worldwide. It is what decides what enters the answer when somebody asks Google something.

2. A new input interface. The traditional search box was rebuilt from scratch. Instead of a line of text, there is a field that accepts long questions, context, files, images, and answers with a conversational sequence, not with ten blue links.

3. Generative UI. Instead of returning a fixed page, Google now assembles interfaces to fit the question. Searches about finance generate interactive charts. Searches about travel generate comparison tools. The results page stopped being a template and became an artefact generated in real time.

4. Information agents. Autonomous agents running 24 hours a day in the background, monitoring the web, blogs, news, social networks, market data, and alerting the user when something relevant happens. Google Alerts of 2003 rebuilt with a frontier model.

5. AI Mode expansion. It already has a billion monthly users. Queries have doubled quarter on quarter since launch. AI Overviews, which shows AI-generated summaries above the traditional results, reaches 2.5 billion users.

Almost all of this is being launched without a subscription, globally, from that week onwards. The information agents start in the US over the summer, but the rest of the package is universal.

The change nobody is discussing

The obvious reading is that Google is responding to competitive pressure from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. That is true, but it is the least interesting part.

The interesting part is structural.

For two decades, the relationship between brands and Google worked like this: Google indexed content, the user typed keywords, the algorithm chose 10 links, the user clicked one. SEO work was optimising for that flow: rank in the top 3, win the click, take traffic to the site.

That flow still exists, but it stopped being the only one. And in many verticals it is no longer the main one.

When somebody asks Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity for a concrete recommendation, "which is the best CRM for a Portuguese sales team", "which lawyer in Lisbon for an employment law matter", "which dentist in Porto does implants", what happens is a synthesis. The model reads sources, decides what is relevant, and answers with a short list of names.

The user does not click. They read the answer. Perhaps they ask something more. Perhaps they go straight to the site of the brand that appears cited. But the decision point has already been crossed inside the conversation with the AI.

Appearing in that answer is a different thing from ranking in Google. The rules are different. The signals that matter are different. And almost nobody in Portugal is looking at this systematically.

What GEO is

GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the name that is sticking for the work of making a brand, product or service visible inside the answers of generative engines. It is not a marketing term. It is a field of practice forming in real time, with academic publications, documented cases and an initial set of practices that are starting to stabilise.

What it is not is also worth being clear about:

  • GEO does not replace SEO. SEO still matters for traditional organic traffic, which still exists and represents significant volume in many verticals.
  • GEO is not writing for the AI. It is not stuffing a site with schema markup or repeating keywords in a different way.
  • GEO is not a prompt trick. There is no magic formula that makes ChatGPT recommend a specific brand.

What GEO is, in current practice:

  1. Presence diagnosis. Measuring, with criteria, in which questions relevant to the brand the brand appears in the answers of the main engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Mode) and in which it does not. Without that baseline, everything else is speculation.
  2. Source analysis. Understanding which sources the models cite when they answer about the sector, comparison sites, industry publications, forums, social profiles, and how the brand is represented in those sources.
  3. Distributed presence work. Building and improving presence in the places that matter: own pages with the structure and depth the models prefer to cite, profiles in relevant directories and platforms, editorial contributions in the sector's reference publications.
  4. Answer-ready content. Reworking your own content to answer directly the questions real customers ask the models, not for keywords, but for question intents.
  5. Continuous monitoring. The models' answers change. They change when the models are updated, when the underlying index changes, when competitors publish new content. Following that drift is part of the work, not an extra.

Why now, in Portugal

Three pragmatic reasons:

Real adoption. Global AI Mode has a billion users. ChatGPT has 900 million weekly users. Perplexity has grown consistently over the last 18 months. Portuguese users are in those numbers. Portuguese companies are not yet optimising for them.

An open competitive window. In B2B and professional sectors in Portugal, most companies have no work done in this dimension yet. Building presence now costs less effort than it will cost in 18 months, when it becomes established practice.

A measurable cost of inaction. When a brand does not appear in a generated answer, there is no signal. There is no drop in Search Console, there is no alert. The loss is silent. Whoever only looks at classic SEO metrics will keep thinking everything is fine, while losing share of voice in a layer they are not measuring.

What changes for whoever decides

If you run marketing, sales or product in a Portuguese company, there are three questions worth asking this week:

  1. When we ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for a solution in our sector, in Portuguese, do we appear in the answer? In what order? Which competitors appear before us?
  2. Which sources are these models citing when they answer about our space? Are we present in those sources?
  3. Do we have a way of measuring the drift of these answers over time, or are we operating blind?

If all three answers are "I don't know", that is information. The next step is to do the diagnosis, any diagnosis, with any tool, even by hand, to stop operating blind.

Closing notes

Google I/O 2026 inaugurated nothing. It merely made it impossible to keep pretending that the entry point to the internet is still an empty text box.

Search became a conversation. The brands that appear in that conversation, and the ones that do not, are diverging as a result. This divergence is still early. In 18 months it will not be.
