How to appear in Gemini
Gemini plugs into the Google ecosystem, but the organic top 10 explains only 38% of citations in AI Overviews. Classic SEO as the entry ticket, schema and the Google listing, YouTube ahead of the citations, declared authorship, and why Gemini does not show up in Search Console.
Gemini is the engine where classic SEO counts most, and where it gets you least far. What Google indexes and understands well feeds it; what Google cites in AI answers comes more and more from outside the top 10.
How Gemini decides
Through the Google ecosystem. The index, the Google Business Profile listing, YouTube. Google's generative engines favour Google's own content (Grossman et al., SIGIR 2026), and that is not a flaw to work around: it is a map of where to be.
Less and less through ranking. In AI Overviews, the share of citations coming from the organic top 10 fell from 76% to 38% in a year (Ahrefs, March 2026, 863 thousand SERPs). Ranking is the entry condition; the citability of the passage decides the rest.
With YouTube in front. It is the most cited domain in Google's AI answers, at 22.9% of AI Overviews citations (Ahrefs, September 2026).
What to do, in order
01 · Look after classic SEO, because here it is the entry ticket
Gemini plugs into the Google ecosystem: what Google indexes and understands well feeds Gemini. In comparative questions, being in the organic top 10 is the starting condition, and it is not enough: in AI Overviews the top 10 explains 38% of citations (Ahrefs, March 2026, 863 thousand SERPs), against 76% a year earlier. The structure and citability of the page decide the rest.
Do: healthy indexing, fast pages, and the answer to each comparative question in the first sentence of the right section. Search Console tells you what Google reads; what it cites is measured separately.
02 · Complete the schema.org and keep the Google listing current
Google's generative engines favour Google's own content (Grossman et al., SIGIR 2026), and the Google Business Profile listing is Google content. For a brand with locations, an out-of-date listing is the first thing Gemini reads and the first thing it describes wrongly.
Do: Organization and Person on the site, Product or Service with complete attributes, FAQPage where there are questions. And the Google listing per location: hours, categories, photos, reviews answered.
03 · Be on YouTube, which is the most cited domain
YouTube is the most cited domain in Google's AI answers: 22.9% of AI Overviews citations in September 2026, against 20.9% in June (Ahrefs). A video that answers a buyer question, with the brand name said out loud and written in the description, is content Gemini reads and cites.
Do: one video per buyer question that matters, with the answer in the first thirty seconds, a transcript, and the brand in the title and the description. It is not television production; it is answering the question.
04 · Declare who writes
Authors with names and credentials on the key pages, with Person schema and sameAs pointing at real profiles. Google has read authorship for years; its generative engines inherit that criterion. Anonymous institutional content is what an engine has no reason to prefer.
Do: one named author per pillar page, visible in the text and marked in the schema, with the same name in both places. Credentials in one line: who they are, why they know.
05 · Measure with third-party tools, because Google does not show it
Brand mentions in Gemini answers do not appear in Search Console or in GA4 (Search Engine Land, August 2026). The Search Console AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, not conversational Gemini. Whoever waits to see it in the Google panel waits forever.
Do: a fixed set of real buyer questions, run every week in Gemini, with history. It is what we do, alongside the Google surfaces and the other engines.
The check, in one command
What is verified with a command. Swap the domain for yours.
Google-Extended is not blocked
$ curl -s https://example.com/robots.txt | grep -iA1 'Google-Extended' User-Agent: Google-Extended Allow: /
The directive Google-Extended is not a crawler: it is the switch that tells Google whether the content may be used to train and ground the Gemini models. Blocking it does not take the page out of Google Search or out of AI Overviews, but it does take it out of Gemini's memory. If there is no block at all, it is allowed by default. The full check is in six commands to find out whether the AI can read your site.
What does not work
Expecting good ranking to be enough: it explains a little over a third of the citations. Expecting to see Gemini in Search Console: it does not show up. And schema that does not match what is on the page, which Google has caught for years and which costs more than having no schema at all.
Frequently asked questions
Are Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?
No. Gemini is the conversational app; AI Overviews and AI Mode are surfaces inside Google Search, fed by Gemini models. They share the ecosystem and the index, but the citation behaviour is different and is measured separately. AI Mode has its own guide.
Is appearing in Gemini just doing good SEO?
It is the starting condition, not the result. The organic top 10 explains 38% of citations in AI Overviews (Ahrefs, March 2026); the other 62% come from outside, from pages with structure and citability. YouTube, the Google listing and declared authorship are what separates being read from being cited.
Does Gemini show up in Search Console?
No. The Search Console AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search. Mentions in the Gemini app do not appear in Search Console or in GA4 (Search Engine Land, August 2026). They are measured with third-party tools, as a series.
How long does it take to appear in Gemini?
Through the search path, at the pace of the Google index: days to weeks for a new page to enter, and then it depends on whether it answers the question. Through the model's memory, months. Nobody serious promises a deadline; what is promised is weekly measurement.
