Why start here

In the engines that answer from memory, months pass between publishing and being named, with no signal in between. In Copilot the chain is observable end to end: you publish, you notify, you confirm the indexing, and the citation becomes possible. When a client needs to see movement early to justify the investment, this is usually where it shows up first.

01 · Confirm that Bing has you

IndexNow is an open protocol for telling the engines that an address changed, instead of waiting for them to come round again. You publish a key file at the root of the site, and that key is public by design: it is not a secret, it is proof that whoever sends the notification controls the domain.

The check is one command, and it has to answer 200:

03 · Notify at deploy time

The step almost everybody skips: send the notification automatically, not by hand when somebody remembers. The way to do it is as a post-build step that reads the sitemap just generated, so there are never two lists of addresses drifting apart from one another.

The rule worth taking from this is never to duplicate the source of truth. If the notification reads a hand-written list, sooner or later it will announce pages that no longer exist and miss the ones born yesterday.

04 · Read the AI panel

Bing Webmaster Tools has a view of performance on AI surfaces. It does not have, at the date of this article, a public API that lets you pull those numbers automatically, which means consulting it in the panel. The habit is still worth it, because it is the only direct window an AI engine opens for us.

What this does not solve

Being indexed makes the citation possible; it does not make it likely. Who gets cited still depends on answering the question better and on being a recognisable entity, which is the work described in how to appear in ChatGPT. Copilot shortens the cycle; it does not replace the content.
